Pinakie Kansabanil is the Author of, “Mountains to Manhattan”, a story of a young Tibetan woman’s search and fight for her identity. Pinakie is a successful professional who writes by night to keep his passion going. At Pleasantreads, we are always on the look-out for authors who have a unique story to tell.  We had a chat with Pinakie recently. Here are the excerpts of the conversation below.

Question 1: Hi, Pinakie, please tell our readers about Pinakie Kansabanik, the man. Who is he and what is his inspiration behind writing?

I am a nature loving man who loves the mountains and the jungles of the Eastern Himalayas in particular, the area where I was brought up.  I always wanted to tell stories… there are so many interesting stories that can be told to the world. The urge to share the stories that I know helped me in writing.

Question2:  Your novel, Mountains to Manhattan is a story about Tenzin Lhamo and her fight for identity. This is a very unique subject and has been depicted in a passionate manner. What was your thought process/motivation behind the book?

It is so painful to not have a country of your own.  The Tibetans in India are technically stateless persons.  When I had put myself into the thought of not having a country of my own, it wrenched  my heart. So, I thought of bringing their story to the world.

Question 3: I was tempted to ask, is Tenzin’s character a purely fictional one or does it bear some resemblance to some-one? The reason I ask this is because, it appears to be very real and as a reader, one understands the predicament of the character quite clearly.

It resembles to the few of the women I spoke to.

Question 4:  At the end of the book, you have quoted the areas and sources of your research [Extensive Research!] What are your thoughts on that?

This is a fiction but highly dependent on the social, political and the religious situations of the Tibetan people and their country. Other than the characters all the place, monuments and organizations mentioned in the book are real. So I thought of adding the bibliography to assure the readers about the authenticity of the facts written in the book.

Question 5: How much time did you require to write the book?

About 7-8 months

Question 6:  Do you plan to bring this story on the big/small screen? For what it’s worth, this story definitely deserves to be told.

Surely, I would love to see the story on the screen. It would be great if any production house come forward.

Question 7:  I am fascinated by your passion for the Free Tibet Movement. What drives you to support this movement?

The more you read about Tibet, the more you know and you believe to stand by them. I wish no country on this earth is ruled by someone else. All countries should be independent and all must live in peace.

Question8: Which is PinakieKansabanik’s favourite book, and favourite movie  and tell us why?

Huh! That’s a long list but mostly from the Bengali Literature.  To name a few, Chander Pahar by Bibhutibhusan Bandhopadhay, Sesher Kabita, Gora  by Rabindranath Tagore, Feluda series by Satyajit Ray,  Sei Samay, Purba Pashim by Sunil Gangopadhay and many many more. Very tough to select one.

My all time favourite movie is Pather Panchali and Nayak, both by Satyajit Ray.

Question 9: Please tell our readers about your forthcoming books

Not yet decided. There are few plots in my mind, let’s see…

Question 10: If you had to describe yourself in one word – which word would you choose and why?

Story Teller – as I love to tell stories to the world.

Question 11: Do you have any spare time and if yes, then what do you do in it?

Listen to music, spend time  with my five year old son.

Question 12:  What do you think about the new generation of e-book readers ?

EBook is getting some popularity and I am fine with me. We should welcome the changing technology. But a recent survey has suggested that 62% of 16 to 24 year-olds prefer reading printed books to ebooks on an e-reading device. So it speaks the rest.

Question 13:  Any advice for young wannabe authors?

Write authentic, write honestly and keep writing.

Question 13: Where can your readers get in touch with you?

Through Facebook.
