Generally, movies based on books have a polarizing effect. They are either loved or are hated – both in extremes. A well made movie will draw praise from critics and earn accolades at the Box- office, but on the other hand, a poorly made movie will earn brick bats and destroy careers of the people who made the movie.

However, it gradually earned a huge fan following and has now earned the status of a cult classic.The movie is actually based off a story called,” Rita Hayworth and the Shwashank Redemption” from the book Different Seasons .
Life Lesson from the movie: Do not depsair, even in the face of great adversity for good times are indeed around the corner[ Well, like after 19 years – the protagonist escapes jail after digging a tunnel for 19 looong years!]
The Godfather: Every crime-movie lover will swear by this movie. It is through this epic that terms like consigliere, caporegime, Cosa Nostra, and omertà were introduced to us. The movie was an epic, not only due to the story but due to casting coup that was pulled off : Giants like Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert Duvall and Diane Keaton shared the same screen space for the first and possibly the last time.
Forrest Gump : Tom Hanks essays the role of the titular character. Forrest Gump is kind-hearted, likeable but not very smart and lives his life upholding the saying,”Life is a box of Chocolates – you never know, what you gonna get!”. The movie broke box-office records and also fetched Hanks an Academy Award. Based on the book Forrest Gump by Winston Groom.
The Bourne Identity : We all know how Matt Damon crushed this role-playing the uber-cool Jason Bourne. But this famous movie is based off an equally famous book by Robert Ludlum.
Schindler’s List : The eponymous Character is played by Liam Neeson who sets out on a mission to save hundreds of Jews. This epic movie is actually based on Schindler’s Ark by Austrian Author Thomas Keneally.
Three Idiots : This movie starring Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and R.Madhavan made all kinds of records at the Bollywood Box Office. It taught us the virtues of following our hearts. It was also mired in controversy since it allegedly did not give credit where it was due. Based off the book Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat.
Angoor: This 1982 Movies starring Sanjeev Kumar had not one, but two dual-roles [ of himself and Deven Verma] leading to complete confusion and of course laughter and joy! Based on the play The Comedy of Errors by Will Shakespeare.
Silver Linings Playbook: Bradley Cooper plays the role of a man suffering from Bipolar Disorder in this movie by David O Russell. Based on the book of the same name by Matthew Quick.
Maqbool: This Bollywood Crime-Drama starring Irrfan Khan, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj won a lot of hearts at Bollywood and also established Irrfan Khan as a mainstream actor. Based on the book Macbeth by Will Shakespeare.
